The Ricoh WG-M1 is not your average camcorder. In fact, calling it a mere camcorder is a bit of an insult. This is an action camera, made for adventure, with the features and specifications to match. It's simple and direct when you need it to be. At the same time, it's specially calibrated to get those hard-to-capture action videos and stills. If you're looking for a camera to record your next big adventure, this one could be well worth your attention.
The Ricoh WG-M1 isn't your granddad's clunky camcorder. It's made to go where you go, whether that's up in the air, over rough roads, or even in the water. You might think GoPro has the corner on the adventure cam market, but that just isn't true. There are other viable alternatives out there, and this model is one of them. This is an adventure cam in the truest sense of the word, and it's packed with features that make it worthy of the name.
First, let's look at what makes this a great camera. Because that's why we're here, right? What, exactly, can this camera do, and what sets it apart from the rest?
Full HD Movies
This camera allows you to capture full HD movies at 1280 X 960 pixels. With a speed of 10 images per second, the Ricoh WG-M1 is made for speed. It has a 1.5-inch color LCD monitor, and, thanks to a selection of creative tools, you can view, edit and share right from your device. And speaking of editing, face detection, auto-focus and auto-exposure features help you to put the spotlight where it belongs -- on you and your friends.
Large, Simple Controls
When you're in the middle of the action, you don't want to have to fiddle with complicated controls. This camera's control buttons are large and simple, so you can do what you need to do when you need to do it, and without breaking the action.
Want something that can take stills, as well? You've got it. The Ricoh WG-M1 allows you to capture stunning, high resolution still images, through a combination of a bright F2.8 lens, a wide, 160-degree angle of view, and 14.0 effective megapixels.
Unobstructed, True-To-Life Sound
And how does the sound quality compare? The Ricoh WG-M1 boasts a rugged, housing-free design. As a result, your videos have excellent, unobstructed, true-to-life stereo sound.
Micro SD And Micro SDHC Card Compatible
Storage is a snap with Micro SD and Micro SDHC compatibilities.
View, Edit, Share
This camera is made to capture, edit, and share your adventures on the fly. How? Through built-in WiFi and a dedicated app. The app allows you to capture, playback, edit, and share images remotely from your phone. This means that if you capture something really cool, you don't have to wait until you get home to share it. You can display your images not only by the order in which you captured them but also in chronological order.
Built For Adventure
What else makes this a great action cam? The Ricoh WG-M1 is built tough. Check out these rugged features that will make it a natural for your next adventure.
The Ricoh WG-M1 is waterproof to a depth of 10 meters (32 feet). After that, you'll need a protective housing. But 32 feet is more than enough to capture your whitewater rafting, snorkeling, or surfing adventures.
Want to film your snowboarding adventure? The Ricoh WG-M1 is cold resistant to -10 Celsius -- that is, 14 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Ricoh WG-M1 is also shock resistant to a distance of two meters (6 feet). This, too, is par for the adventure cam course. But with the included adhesive mount and carabiner strap -- or the magnetic mount or helmet mount that you can buy separately -- there's really no reason to worry about dropping it at all.
Accessories And Add-ons
This camera comes with a carabiner-ready strap, and an adhesive mount, so that it's easy to take along. You can also buy a number of neat accessories separately, including a wrist mount, a magnet mount, and a helmet mount. Why not try a handlebar mount for your next ride? Or an underwater lens protector? Your options for adventure -- and recording your adventures -- are almost endless.
All this and it will fit in the palm of your hand.
How Does The Ricoh WG-M1 Compare?
This camera impressed us, but it always pays to comparison shop. So, toward that end, we took a look at a few similar products. How did the Ricoh stand up to its competition?
GoPro is the standard-bearer for the action cam, so let's kick off our comparison here.
A lot has been made of the improvement of video quality of the Hero6 over the Hero5, and we have to admit, we're impressed too. It has a larger screen than the Ricoh WG-M1, and a comparable number of megapixels. At the same time, there are a few places where the Ricoh seems like the better choice. The GoPro has no shockproof rating, for example. You need to buy a separate case. And the price is quite a bit higher, as well. Are the larger screen and the GoPro name worth an extra hundred bucks? You'll have to decide for yourself.

The Sony FDR-X3000R is an action camera with a wrist-mounted remote live view display, which is pretty neat. Sony has put a lot of effort into image stabilization, and by many accounts, their efforts have paid off. The key is a completely mechanical floating lens system, which captures your action video with a minimum of wobble. The design is a bit different from the competition as well. Instead of a small box, it looks like a camcorder. Unlike the GoPro and the Ricoh WG-M1, however, this model isn't waterproof, shockproof, or cold resistant without a case. The price is comparable to that of the GoPro. But if you're looking for image stability, this is definitely one to watch.

There were a couple of things that made this tough little camera stand out to us. First, the price — right now, you can find it on Amazon for around $79.99. For that price, even if it didn't turn out to be the camera of your dreams, you still probably wouldn't feel like you'd lost a lot of money. Second, did we say tough? The iSaw Edge is waterproof to 40 meters — that's 131 feet, which, if you've been keeping track, is about a hundred feet more than the Ricoh.
When it comes to action cams, consumers have a lot of choices. This is why it pays to do your research. What's the most important quality to you? Is image resolution your thing? Or video stability? Or perhaps you're willing to sacrifice a bit of technology to have a tough, rugged camera you can take anywhere. Are you ready to take the plunge and buy a dream machine, or do you just want to get your feet wet, without taking a financial soaking?
